The design of Wonderland is a testament to Zhang's innovative approach to space and form. The narrative of Wonderland is profound, reflecting the Chinese people's evolving perceptions of the Taoyuan space since 907 AD. The design successfully bridges the gap between the industrialized environment and the natural environment, creating a living space that is both modern and deeply rooted in cultural heritage.
Zhang's design process was meticulous and thoughtful. The visitors' spatial experience was considered from the outset, with the layout of the functional areas such as the conference area, the exhibition area, and the tea room unfolding as visitors traverse the central passage. The main 10-meter high space, revealed as visitors pass along a gray slate wall, fills them with awe, reflecting the designer's mastery over spatial dynamics.
The Wonderland design also stands out for its unique interpretation of time. Zhang distinguishes between the time in nature, marked by changing seasons, and the time in space, caused by the rotation of the earth. This concept is visually represented by a large glass art installation suspended in the air, consisting of over 5,000 manually installed pink-white peach petals, each of different size, brightness, and width. This installation serves as a visual guide in the actual use of space and simulates the temporal dynamics of natural movement.
Zhang's design was not without its challenges. The large glass art installation required meticulous planning and execution. However, the final result is a testament to Zhang's dedication to his craft. The design also required a deep understanding of traditional Chinese painting and the subtle characteristics of space, which Zhang successfully incorporated into the design.
Wonderland is a remarkable design that showcases Zhang's innovative approach to space and form. It is a testament to his ability to blend traditional and modern design elements to create a unique, engaging space. The design has been recognized with a Silver A' Design Award, a testament to its outstanding design and innovation.
